The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

Not talking about the great classic here, but the latest movie adaption starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire. The former certainly stood out with his depth of acting (he has come far since the ‘Titanic’ days) but this is not to say that the rest of the cast did not do a good job. All in all, a stellar cast.

There are certainly conflicting views of this adaption. The purists will hate it for its excess burlesque-like mayhem but this is the reason why I like it. Love aside, isn’t ‘The Great Gatsby’ about the emptiness of excessiveness?

Furthermore, any movie that moves viewers to want to read the real classic is a winner in itself because nothing ever beats the book. I liked the book enough (because Fitzgerald is a great writer and probably amongst the top of American writers of the 20th century) but this movie helped me appreciate the classic even better.

Please go catch it if you are a fan of good literary works but do yourself a favour by reading the book first. It’s a short novel; shouldn’t take more than a day to complete.
